Aesthetic Polychrome Transferware Pitcher An aesthetic movement polychrome water pitcher, 10.5" tall and approx. 8" wide without the handle. The pitcher is transfer decorated in the aeshtetic movement style of the period just preceding the Art Nouveau era. Unmarked as to maker, but with a raised seal having an impressed Rd. number 5568. This accurately dates it to 1884, the first year that England required Rd. registration numbers. This polychrome pitcher is in excellent condition, with no blemishes. The decoration shows woodland scenes in inserts on a background of berries and leaves.

This antique platter is part of the Historic America series and this one depicts Barnum's Museum. In Excellent condition. Note that this was marked both England and Made in England. 1871 being the year that the USA enacted the law that all imports bear the "made in" phrase as well as the country of origin. The Johnson Bros. pottery just added the phrase to the existing backstamp. The patent number bears this out. An historic piece in more than one way.

Antique Palissy Pottery Transferware Pitcher A blue and white transferware pitcher made by Palissy Potteries in England in the late 19th century. This is NOT one of the products of the late 20th century. Extensive research gives very little information about the origens of the Palissy Pottery, but I was able to find this which justifies my certainty that this piece did not have the look or feel of a 20th century reproduction: Palissy Works, Chancery Lane, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent These works in Chancery Lane were erected in 1862 by Richard H. Grove For the purpose of decorating, not manufacturing, china ware. In 1867, he retired and was succeeded by his son, Frederick Wedgwood Grove, and his partner, John Stark. They commenced manufacturing their own ware having increased the premises For the purpose and erected the necessary kilns and machinery. They manufactured earthenware only. In this, all the usual dinner, dessert, toilet and other services and domestic articles were produced, of all degrees of decoration - from plain and printed to enamelled and gilt varieties. Spirit and wine show-barrels or casks were also specialities. Messrs. Grove & Stark continued to 1885. F. W. Grove continued to 1889, the firm subsequently becoming Grove & Oliver (1889-94), Grove & Prowse (1895-8), then Grove & Co. to about 1904." From: 'Jewitt's Ceramic Art of Great Britain 1800-1900' - first published 1878, revised 1883 The pitcher is in very good condition, with no chips or cracks. There is some staining inside and on the lower part of the handle, also crackling of the glaze. 7" tall and 8" from spout to handle.
Circa: 1867-1885
Size: 7" tall
