At least I believe it is a cork top attached to the underside of the ceramic nipple. There is a crack that goes completely around the bottle, caused, I believe from someone trying to force the bottle open. I will not attempt it as this is a wonderful highly decorated ceramic piece in itself and highly collectible. Printed on the front is the motto: Here is the Milk of Human Kindness.
